Background
There is clear evidence that shows people from Black, Asian and other minoritised ethnic groups are disproportionately affected by homelessness. Housing is also less affordable for many people from these communities, with over a quarter of working adults spending more than a third of their income on housing.
But we know little about how these experiences relate to wider systemic discrimination based on a person’s ethnicity, culture or nationality.
Over the coming months Crisis will be investigating how race, homelessness and housing interplay by looking at the lived experiences of homelessness and housing precarity among people from Black, Asian and minoritised households. This includes negative experiences of accessing support and services and having to put up with insecure or unsafe living situations.
As part of the work, we also want to ask challenging questions about how and why people from minoritised ethnic communities have different, and often poorer, access to and quality of housing. We also want to understand how wider social inequalities and exclusions such as imprisonment, poor school experiences and severe mental health challenges impact on this.
How can you get involved?
To help shape this research we are inviting people from Black, Asian and minoritised communities who have:
- lived experience of homelessness or challenging housing situations
- or, who have experience of supporting friends, family, or clients in these situations
to join a group that will guide the project to ensure it is grounded in real experiences of these issues. As part of this we will offer training and support.
If you are interested in the research and share some of the above experiences please fill in the contact form below, and a member of our Research team will get back to you.
You can also email us at research@crisis.org.uk
Other ways to support the research
If you do not feel you have the time available to join the group, we are also looking for people to take part in a survey or an interview with us. If this sounds of interest, please also complete the contact form below.
We’re also keen to speak to people who work on issues related to housing, homelessness and/or racial equality. So even if you can’t directly participate in the research, please complete the contact form below or email us, and a member of the team will get back to you on how you can support the project.
