Right now, thousands of people who need support to move on from homelessness are being housed in unsafe, squalid homes by rogue housing providers who are profiting without supplying the help they’re supposed to give. Instead of being the safe home we all need, this housing is making people's lives even worse. In some cases, it's damaging not only their mental but their physical health. Many are effectively trapped, with no alternative but living on the street if they want to leave. But nothing illegal is happening, their landlords are simply exploiting a poorly regulated system for profit with no thought for the wellbeing of their tenants. We know there are also plenty of ethical organisations providing exempt accommodation that does what it's supposed to do - help people get back on their feet.
