When writing or updating your Will, we always recommend you speak to a Solicitor or other Will-writing professional. There are two main types of gift you can include in your Will. A specific sum of money, e.g., £1,000, is called a pecuniary gift. Alternatively, you can specify a fraction or percentage of your estate, which is called a residuary gift.
If you have any questions see if you can find the answer below, or you can contact George Shelley on 020 7036 2642, or wills@crisis.org.uk.
The essential information you need is our charity number 1082947 and address:
Crisis, 66 Commercial Street, London, E1 6LT.
You can leave a specific amount, for example £1,000. This is called a pecuniary legacy.
Or you can leave a percentage or fraction of your estate, for example 1%. This is called a residual or residuary gift. These are worked out after all the other gifts and expenses have been dealt with.
When you're planning for the future, we understand that of course, your loved ones come first. One way you can make sure those closest to you are taken care of is by donating 1% of your estate to Crisis, and leaving the rest to your family and friends. A gift like this would make a big difference to the lives of people experiencing homelessness in the future.
The law society is a professional body for Solicitors. You can find a Solicitor on their website by using the Find a Solicitor tool, or calling them on 020 7320 5650.
Any gift you leave to Crisis will be spent in the best way we can - supporting people out of homelessness for good. If you are interested in leaving a gift for one of our Skylight Centres, contact the friendly team on wills@crisis.org.uk for more information on how to do this.
Charitable legacies are usually exempt from Inheritance Tax so generally, leaving a gift to Crisis would reduce the overall tax due. And currently, if you leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, the overall rate of Inheritance Tax you pay is reduced. We cannot guarantee exactly what savings you could make so always consult a professional for financial advice specific to you.
Making a standard Will with a Solicitor can cost between £100 - £200, depending on your situation. You can write your own Will for free by taking advantage of our offer to Crisis supporters and using Farewill. Head to www.farewill.com/crisis to find out more about how it works and get started.
It is sensible to review your Will every few years to make sure it still reflects your wishes - and this could be an opportunity to add a gift to Crisis. When you make a new Will it should contain a clause that revokes all previous Wills. This can be done with a Solicitor, or by using Farewill to write your Will.
If you have questions about leaving a gift in your Will to Crisis, or would just like to discuss it, with no obligations, you can contact George Shelley, who will be happy to help with any questions you have.
