The cost of living crisis means more people like us will suffer

“The cost of living crisis means more people like us will suffer. They need your help.”

Crisis asked us to help create this appeal at a crucial time - in the middle of a cost of living crisis, with thousands of people at risk of being pushed into homelessness. We've both experienced homelessness and we want to tell you what it's like. But we also want to tell you how amazing Crisis supporters like you helped us slowly piece ourselves back together and feel whole again. And we want to tell you what a difference your support could make to people over the difficult months ahead.

Surging energy prices, taxes and inflation are adding to the existing pressures faced by people on the lowest incomes. It leaves them straining under the weight of price increases they can’t afford. We know something about how traumatised people will feel. But, thanks to you, Crisis are supporting people really struggling in this crisis. And they’ll continue to put pressure on Governments for the housing and support that we know will end homelessness for good.

Could you help Crisis be there for someone at the sharp end of the cost of living crisis? Any gift you can give, big or small, will help them leave homelessness behind for good.

How your support helps people like Cecelia and Paul rebuild their lives

Welcome

As the cost of living crisis pushes people into homelessness, our engagement and assessment teams could be the first port of call for people approaching crisis for the first time. We offer new members initial needs assessments where we can talk through their situation and make a plan together.

Wellbeing

Through group sessions and one-to-one therapy with clinical psychologists, your support helps members improve their mental and physical wellbeing. We work particularly closely with people experiencing complex mental health problems too, helping them get specialist help and accommodation as urgently as possible.

Employment

Additional financial pressures and job losses during the pandemic saw more people being pushed into homelessness. We're supporting people to find work, with specialist teams who connect people with employers, as well as help with CVs and interview practice.

Skills

Members can access a vast array of courses and qualifications – helping them take another critical step forwards. We also cover vocational skills, including retail and hospitality traineeships in our shops.

Housing

During the difficult months ahead Crisis’ specialist teams will keep trying to negotiate more affordable rents on behalf of members, and, to help people secure accommodation, we’ll provide financial support to cover deposits and rent in advance.

Member involvement

Member involvement means members working with Crisis to improve what we do to end homelessness. As well as co-producing this appeal, Cecelia and Paul are on the Experts by Experience panel, where people with lived experience inform our work and participate in our continued development.

Paul painted this image for this appeal. It reflects the important parts both art and books have played in his journey out of homelessness.

“I used to read voraciously, five novels a week. But when I was homeless, my brain was racing so fast, I couldn’t take words in. Now I have this stability, I can tackle life again, which includes being able to enjoy reading. Thank you for helping people like us piece ourselves back together and rebuild our lives.”
